Holiday Hosting Countdown: Projects That Finish by December

Every October the phone calls change. The summer questions — additions, ADUs, second stories — give way to one urgent theme: the family is coming in December. What can you still do?

We appreciate the honesty of the question, so here's an honest answer. Some projects genuinely finish by the holidays if they start now. Others can't, no matter what anyone promises you — and a contractor who says otherwise in mid-October is telling you what you want to hear. Here's how we'd sort it.

What can still finish

The projects that beat the calendar share two traits: the scope is contained, and the materials are decided fast. That means cosmetic and single-room work, not layout changes.

• A guest bath refresh — new vanity, fixtures, lighting, paint, maybe tile if selections happen this week. We walked through the full playbook in our guest bath post last month.
• Paint, inside and out. Whole-interior repaints transform a house for the holidays and fit comfortably in the window.
• Lighting and hardware. New fixtures, dimmers, cabinet pulls, door hardware — small line items, outsized first impressions.
• A powder room. The smallest room in the house is the one every guest visits. It can be redone start-to-finish in the time remaining.

The catch on all of these: decisions have to happen up front. The calendar has room for construction; it has no room for three weeks of deliberating over tile.

What can't — and why you shouldn't try

A kitchen remodel, a primary suite, anything that moves walls or plumbing across the house: these are multi-month projects once you count design, engineering, permits, and construction done right. Compressing them doesn't make them faster; it makes them sloppier. The worst holiday outcome isn't an old kitchen — it's a torn-open one, with a dumpster in the driveway on December 20th and family eating takeout around a work light.

If a permit is involved, assume the finish line is next year. In San Diego, plan review alone can absorb a meaningful slice of the weeks you have left — and that's before a single trade sets foot in the house. There's a silver lining, though: starting the design work now means your project enters the permit queue in the quiet weeks of winter, and construction kicks off in the new year with everything decided.

The countdown, week by week

If you're starting a contained project now, the healthy rhythm looks like this: selections locked and materials ordered by late October, demolition and rough work through early November, finishes going in before Thanksgiving, and a deliberate buffer week built in — because something always uses it. A bathroom drywalled the week before guests arrive is a project that was scoped wrong, not one that ran unlucky.
