Keeping Cool: Shading, Ventilation, and AC in a Remodel

August is coming, and with it the handful of weeks when San Diego's famous "no AC needed" reputation gets tested. Most of the year the marine layer does the air conditioning for free. Then a heat wave rolls in — or the Santa Anas show up early — and every house reveals exactly which rooms were designed for this climate and which ones just got lucky.
If you're planning a remodel, this is the perfect month to pay attention, because comfort is mostly decided on paper, long before anyone installs a condenser.
Shade first: stop the heat before it enters
The cheapest cooling is the sunlight that never gets in. West-facing glass is the main offender in this region — that gorgeous sunset window is also a heat lamp from 3 PM on. In a remodel we attack it in layers: roof overhangs and eaves sized for our sun angles, patio covers and pergolas that shade the wall itself, deciduous trees where the landscape allows, and high-performance low-E glazing on any window we're replacing anyway.
A well-placed shade structure earns its keep twice — it cools the interior and creates usable outdoor living space in the same stroke. Homes in inland neighborhoods like Poway, Santee, and Rancho Bernardo, where summer runs ten degrees hotter than the coast, feel this difference the most.

Ventilation second: let the evening do its work
San Diego hands us a nightly gift most houses can't accept: air that drops into the 60s after sunset, even in August. Capturing it takes openings that line up. Windows on opposite sides of a room, casements that scoop the prevailing westerly breeze, operable skylights or high clerestory windows that let hot air escape upward — these turn the whole house into a chimney that empties itself of the day's heat by bedtime.

AC third: right-sized, not supersized
Sometimes mechanical cooling is the honest answer — inland homes, upstairs bedrooms, anyone who sleeps badly at 78 degrees. The mistakes we see aren't about having AC; they're about buying it carelessly:
- Oversized systems that blast, shut off, and never dehumidify properly
- One thermostat governing a two-story house, guaranteeing someone is always uncomfortable
- Ductless mini-splits ignored where they'd be perfect — a single hot bedroom or a new addition
- Skipping duct sealing and attic insulation, then paying to cool the crawl space
A load calculation done on the actual remodeled house — new insulation, new windows, new shading — often comes back a size or two smaller than the old rule-of-thumb guess. Smaller equipment costs less to buy and less to run, every summer, forever.
The whole-house view
Shading, ventilation, insulation, and mechanicals interact, which is why they're best decided together rather than trade by trade. It's one of the quiet advantages of design-build: in a whole-home remodel, the person drawing the window schedule and the person sizing the AC are on the same team, working from the same plan.
