The Thanksgiving Deadline: When to Start a Kitchen Remodel

Every year around early August, the phone calls change. The spring callers wanted dream kitchens someday; the August callers want them by Thanksgiving. And every year we have the same honest conversation: it depends entirely on what "kitchen remodel" means to you — and on whether you're calling this week or in mid-September.

Thanksgiving lands on November 26 this year. That's a little under sixteen weeks away. Here's what that number actually buys, counting backward.

The math nobody wants to hear

A full kitchen remodel isn't one project; it's three stacked on top of each other. Design and selections come first — layout, cabinets, counters, tile, fixtures, all decided and ordered. Then come permits and lead times, which move on the city's schedule and the fabricator's, not yours. Only then does construction start, and a typical gut-and-rebuild kitchen runs a couple of months on site when it's run well.

Stack those honestly and a from-scratch kitchen begun today is a January kitchen, maybe a December one if the scope is tight and every decision lands on time. Anyone promising you a full reconfiguration by turkey day from an August standing start is planning to disappoint you in November.

What sixteen weeks can genuinely deliver

That said, sixteen weeks is real time. Projects that keep the existing layout — same walls, same plumbing locations — move much faster than reconfigurations. New counters, backsplash, lighting, paint, and hardware can transform a kitchen without triggering the long-lead dominoes. Even a cabinet refacing with a new island top photographs like a remodel at a fraction of the disruption.

The smarter play: host this year, remodel in January

Here's what our happiest clients tend to do. They host Thanksgiving in the old kitchen one last time — and they take notes. Where did the traffic jam? Which counter overflowed first? Who got trapped by the oven door? That list, written while the frustration is fresh, is the best design brief a kitchen remodel ever gets.

Then they start design in the late fall, make selections over the holidays when the household calendar is quiet, and break ground in January — the slowest, most schedulable season in San Diego construction. The kitchen is done by late spring, shaken down all summer, and utterly ready when the next Thanksgiving rolls around. With so many of us cooking at home more this year than any year in memory, that timeline pays for itself daily, not just on holidays.

Call now, not after Labor Day. Keep the layout. Choose in-stock materials and accept the second choice when the first is backordered.
