A Second Oven by Thanksgiving: Small Kitchen Wins

But "no full remodel" doesn't mean "nothing." There's a whole category of smaller, surgical kitchen projects that can land before the turkey does — and this year, with so many of us cooking at home more than we have in a decade, they'll earn their keep before the holidays even arrive.

The second oven, without the new kitchen

The single biggest holiday bottleneck is oven capacity, and you don't always need a new kitchen to fix it. If you have a tall pantry cabinet, a deep run of base cabinets, or an underused desk nook (most '90s kitchens have one), there's often room for a wall oven right there. A cabinetmaker, an electrician, and a careful installer can make it happen in weeks, not months.

The prerequisites are electrical capacity and clearances, which is why we scope those first. Older homes in neighborhoods like Kensington or La Mesa sometimes need a panel or circuit upgrade to support a second oven — better to learn that in September than mid-November.

Wins that don't touch a wall

If the oven doesn't pencil out, plenty of other upgrades fit a fall timeline:

• A faucet and sink swap. A deeper single-basin sink with a pull-down faucet changes big-meal cleanup more than almost anything else at its size.
• Roll-out shelves and drawer conversions. Turning fixed shelves into full-extension roll-outs effectively adds storage without adding an inch of cabinet.
• Counter seating. Adding or extending an island overhang gives guests somewhere to land that isn't in your cooking path.
• Lighting. Under-cabinet task lighting and a brighter fixture over the main prep zone make dark November evenings in the kitchen genuinely pleasant.
• A beverage station. Move the coffee maker, the kettle, and the wine opener to a countertop zone away from the range, and holiday guests stop wandering through your cooking triangle entirely.

None of these require permits or demolition, which is exactly why they fit the calendar.

Small project, same discipline

Here's what surprises people: small projects fail for the same reasons big ones do — vague scope, slow selections, and materials that show up late. A wall oven ordered in late October won't be cooking by Thanksgiving no matter how fast the installer works. Appliance and cabinet lead times are the long pole, so the sequence matters: pick the product first, confirm the electrical, then schedule the install around the delivery date.
